I started to explore the idea that we are on metaphoric journeys. One evening I was told a story in a pub that everyone is joined to their soul mate by a red string tied to their little fingers. During their lifetime this string becomes shorter and shorter until two people meet. This story had a profound effect on me and the image of red string stuck in my mind. I became interested in the idea of journey, string, life and relationships and wanted to create my own visual metaphor using the image of red string to map out life’s journey. The Feet of me and my Father (2006) uses this concept and is made up of a pair of resin feet, one mine and one my fathers, they are connected by this red string. The string runs in straight lines and in knots but it is always moving.
Life is never full of answers; our pathways rarely run smoothly and often get tangled with those around us, in my case with my fathers. Perhaps it is in the tangled parts where we learn the most; we meet people, relate to different things and look at the world in a different light. It is perhaps in those knotty dark times that the brightest lights come out.
